Off-Road Electric Wheelchair UK: What You Actually Need

"Off-Road" Doesn't Mean What You Think

When most people say they want an "off-road" electric wheelchair, they don't mean rock crawling. They mean:

  • Walking the dog on a grass field
  • Visiting a National Trust property with gravel paths
  • Getting across a beach car park
  • Navigating a muddy campsite
  • Handling cobblestones in an old town

For these real-world scenarios, you don't need a specialist off-road wheelchair costing £5,000+. You need the right combination of tyres, suspension, motor power, and ground clearance.

The Four Things That Matter

1. Tyre Size and Type

This is the single biggest factor. Small solid tyres (6–8 inch) — found on most portable wheelchairs — get stuck in grass and vibrate painfully on gravel.

What you want:

  • 12-inch pneumatic (air-filled) rear tyres: Roll over obstacles, absorb bumps, grip on loose surfaces
  • 8-inch solid front tyres: Maintenance-free steering that still tracks well

The Eezy Split uses exactly this combination.

2. Suspension

Without suspension, every bump transfers directly through the frame to the user. Front spring suspension absorbs the worst of it — kerb drops, roots, uneven paving.

3. Motor Power

Grass and gravel create more rolling resistance than pavement. 250W motors will struggle. 500W brushless motors handle inclines up to 12° and push through soft ground without overheating.

4. Ground Clearance

If the footrest or battery pack scrapes on every kerb, you'll damage the chair and get stuck. Look for adequate ground clearance — at least 5cm under the lowest point.

Do You Need a "Specialist" Off-Road Wheelchair?

Probably not. Specialist off-road wheelchairs (like the Trekinetic or Mountain Trike) are fantastic machines, but they:

  • Cost £4,000–£8,000+
  • Weigh 40–80kg
  • Don't fold for car transport
  • Are designed for serious terrain most users never encounter

For 90% of UK users who want to enjoy parks, countryside, and coastal paths, a well-specced folding wheelchair with the right tyres and motors is more than enough.

The Practical Choice

The Eezy Split handles UK off-road conditions with:

  • 12-inch pneumatic rear tyres for grip and comfort
  • Front spring suspension for rough ground
  • 500W brushless dual motors for power on inclines
  • 180kg capacity so it doesn't struggle under load
  • And it still folds and splits for car transport — always compare the folded dimensions with your vehicle
