What Is VAT Exemption on Mobility Aids?

Under UK law (VAT Act 1994, Schedule 8, Group 12), chronically sick or disabled people can buy certain goods — including electric wheelchairs — without paying VAT (currently 20%).

This isn't a "discount" or a "benefit" — it's a legal right. The seller is required to offer it.

Who Qualifies?

You qualify if you have any long-term illness or disability, including (but not limited to):

  • Arthritis or joint conditions
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Heart or lung conditions
  • Stroke recovery
  • Spinal injuries
  • Diabetes (with mobility impact)
  • Mental health conditions that affect mobility
  • Age-related mobility decline (if diagnosed)

You do NOT need:

  • A doctor's letter
  • PIP or DLA
  • A blue badge
  • NHS referral
  • Any upfront paperwork

How to Claim VAT Exemption

It's simple: at checkout, you self-declare that you have a qualifying condition. The retailer removes the VAT from your order. That's it.

You're making a legal declaration, so it must be truthful — but no one checks certificates or medical records at point of sale. HMRC may audit the retailer, not the buyer.

How Much Do You Save?

On the Eezy Split:

  • With VAT: £954
  • Without VAT (exempt): £795
  • You save: £159

Can Someone Buy It on Your Behalf?

Yes. A family member, carer, or friend can purchase the wheelchair on behalf of the disabled person and still claim VAT exemption. The person using the chair must be the one who qualifies.

Common Myths

"You need a GP letter"

False. Self-declaration is sufficient under UK law.

"It's only for people on benefits"

False. VAT exemption is based on your condition, not your income or benefit status.

"Only NHS-prescribed equipment qualifies"

False. Any qualifying mobility aid purchased from any retailer is eligible.
