Best Folding Wheelchair for Car Boot: What to Look For in 2026

Why Car Boot Fit Matters More Than You Think

For most wheelchair users, the real test of a "portable" powered wheelchair isn't the showroom — it's the car park. If you can't get your chair into the boot without help, without a ramp, and without a vehicle adaptation, the chair isn't truly portable.

Yet most folding electric wheelchairs still weigh 25–35kg in one piece. That's too heavy for most people to lift, especially if you have limited strength or mobility yourself.

What Makes a Wheelchair Truly Car-Boot Friendly?

1. Total Weight vs Heaviest Single Piece

A chair might weigh 30kg total, but if it splits into two sections — as the EEZY SPLIT does, with a 19.2kg front section with both batteries fitted (16kg without them) and a 10.3kg rear section — it can be easier to manage. The total weight matters less than the heaviest piece you need to lift.

2. Folded Dimensions

Even a lightweight chair is no use if it does not physically fit. The EEZY SPLIT folds to 810 × 600 × 340 mm. Designed to suit most hatchback, estate and SUV boots. Always check the folded dimensions against your vehicle.

3. No Tools or Complicated Mechanisms

The best car-boot wheelchairs have a one-touch fold or split. If you need to remove batteries, detach footrests, or use tools, you'll dread every trip.

4. Stability When Folded

A folded wheelchair that topples over in the boot every time you brake is a hazard. Look for chairs that sit flat and stable.

Folding vs Splitting: Which Is Better?

Folding wheelchairs collapse like a pushchair — they get thinner but remain one heavy unit. You're still lifting the full 25–35kg.

Splitting wheelchairs separate into two independent halves, each with its own wheels. This halves the lifting weight and often results in two compact pieces that pack more efficiently than one bulky folded unit.

Our Recommendation

The Eezy Split combines both approaches: it folds and splits. Fold it for quick stops, split it for the boot. The front section weighs 19.2kg with both batteries fitted (16kg with them slid out) and the rear section 10.3kg — a single button press separates them. With a 180kg weight capacity and 12-inch pneumatic rear tyres, it doesn't compromise on performance to achieve portability.
