Best Electric Wheelchair for Indoor Use: UK Guide to Compact Powerchairs (2026)

22 March 2026 · 6 min read

Compact electric wheelchair being used indoors in a UK home

The Indoor Wheelchair Problem

Most electric wheelchairs are designed with outdoor use in mind — big wheels, wide frames, long wheelbases. They're great on pavements but a nightmare in a terraced house with 70cm doorways and a narrow hallway.

If you need a powered wheelchair that works inside your home, you need to think about dimensions, turning circles, and manoeuvrability first — and everything else second.

The Numbers That Matter

Standard UK Door Widths

  • Internal doors: 68–76cm (older homes can be as narrow as 63cm)
  • Front door: 76–84cm
  • Bathroom door: 63–68cm (often the narrowest)
  • Lift doors: Usually 80cm minimum

Turning Circle

This is how much space the chair needs to do a 180° turn. In a narrow hallway or small kitchen, this matters enormously.

  • Standard powerchairs: 120–150cm turning radius
  • Compact folding chairs: 80–110cm turning radius
  • Eezy Split: Tight turning circle suitable for most UK homes

Tip: Measure your narrowest hallway width. If the chair's turning circle is wider than the hallway, you won't be able to turn around — you'll have to reverse out.

Features That Make Indoor Use Easier

1. Speed Control

Indoor use requires precise, slow movement. Look for chairs with:

  • Variable speed joystick (slower = more control)
  • Low-speed indoor mode
  • Smooth acceleration (no lurching starts)

2. Tight Turning Circle

Mid-wheel drive and compact wheelbases help. The Eezy Split's compact design allows tight turns in most UK hallways and kitchens.

3. Floor-Friendly Tyres

Solid front tyres or pneumatic tyres at the right pressure won't scuff hardwood or laminate floors. Avoid hard plastic castors that can scratch surfaces.

4. Low Overall Length

A long wheelchair won't fit in a small lift and can't navigate L-shaped hallways. Check the total length when the footrests are extended.

5. Removable or Swing-Away Footrests

Being able to remove or swing the footrests out of the way makes transfers easier and reduces the chair's footprint when stationary.

Can One Chair Work Indoors AND Outdoors?

Yes — and this is the ideal scenario for most people. A single chair that handles both avoids the cost and storage hassle of owning two.

The key features of a good indoor-outdoor chair:

  • Compact enough for doorways and hallways (under 62cm wide)
  • Robust enough for pavements, kerbs, and gentle off-road (10–12 inch rear tyres)
  • Designed for car transport (folds or splits); always compare folded dimensions with the vehicle
  • Long enough range for a day out (15km+)

The EEZY SPLIT folds to 810 × 600 × 340 mm, has 12-inch pneumatic rear tyres and travels up to 25km from a full charge. Designed to suit most hatchback, estate and SUV boots. Always check the folded dimensions against your vehicle.

Home Adaptations to Consider

If your home is tight, some simple adaptations can make wheelchair use much easier:

Doorway Widening

A carpenter can widen most internal doors by 10–15cm for £200–£500 per door. This often makes the difference between a chair fitting and not fitting.

Threshold Ramps

Small portable ramps (£20–£50) smooth the transition between rooms with different floor levels. Much easier than trying to bump over thresholds repeatedly.

Furniture Rearrangement

Creating clear pathways of at least 90cm width through your home costs nothing and makes navigation dramatically easier.

Disabled Facilities Grant

If you need more significant home adaptations, your local council can provide a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) of up to £30,000 in England. Contact your council's housing or occupational therapy department.

Common Indoor Wheelchair Mistakes

Buying the most powerful chair available

Indoors, you don't need 500W motors or 12-inch tyres. What you need is manoeuvrability and precision. However, if you want one chair for both indoor and outdoor use, the extra power is worth having.

Forgetting about charging

Where will you charge the chair? You need a power socket accessible from where the chair will be parked. Measure the charger cable length.

Not testing in your actual home

If possible, test any chair inside your home before committing. Door widths, turning spaces, and floor surfaces vary enormously between UK homes.
