Best Electric Wheelchairs for Heavier Users in the UK

If you weigh more than 120–150 kg, many lightweight folding powerchairs are not designed for you. Here is what to look for — and how to keep the chair transportable.

Respect the maximum user weight

The maximum user weight is a safety limit, not a guide. Exceeding it strains the frame, motors and brakes and can affect your warranty. Choose a chair whose limit sits comfortably above your weight plus anything you carry.

Motors, frame and suspension

Heavier users benefit from stronger motors for hills and kerbs, a sturdier frame and suspension for comfort. The EEZY SPLIT uses dual 500 W brushless motors with front suspension and has a 180 kg (400 lb) maximum user weight.

Keeping a heavy-duty chair car-friendly

Stronger chairs are heavier, which is where a split frame helps. The EEZY SPLIT's front section weighs 16 kg and the rear section 10.3 kg (both measured without batteries), and both 1.6 kg batteries are carried in the front section — so it lifts as 19.2 kg until you slide them out. Complete, it weighs 29.5 kg.
